Looks like Scion and XLR8R teamed up to create a site as well as a mobile app called City Guide which allows users to get a “what’s up” in their chosen city. In their effort they enlisted the help of known musicians to create a mix for their city. Anyway, what can I say that hasn’t been written on the site but the mix is excellent and FREE!

Future vintage garage/dub business from Vancouver, BCs Taal Mala. He just cut this mix (full of unreleased originals) and was kind enough to pass it along to YYY. Taal Mala is one of the large contributors to the LIGHTA! crew who have been putting together some epic shows up in British Columbia and really establishing their own unique style of dubstep and music overall. Big things yet to come from LIGHTA and SUB OSC so be on the lookout.

I posted a track that was in the makings by Ben Frost the other day. I did so because I find his approach interesting and to see a musician work through process, fascinating. I was telling kenneth the other day – many of the producers and musicians we post here – to see live can be quiet boring and dull – they need to move away from the laptop and become entertainers. I digress. I was captured by Ben’s music in the past particularly by one track titled Theory of Machines. I posted that awhile back.
His latest album is dark – it feels like it should accompany a horror film of sorts. Speaking of which – watch Let the right one in – amazing film!
Sequenze 21 had a very nice write up of Ben’s latest effort: “Formerly from Melbourne, Australia, composer Ben Frost now makes his home in Reykjavik, Iceland. Just shy of thirty, Frost has already had a wide ranging career. He’s played in Glenn Branca-inspired guitar ensembles, collaborated with the likes of Nico Muhly and Jeremy Gara (of Arcade Fire), and remixed Björk.”
“His latest recording, By the Throat, combines confrontational avant sonics with the patient sculpting of more ambient artists. Frost enlists a number of artists in the cause: Gara, Muhly, Icelandic string quartet Amiina, and Swedish metal band Crowpath all make appearances on recording. As one can imagine, the surface changes widely, sometimes violently. Hushed, breathy vocals are juxtaposed with screams. Animal sounds – lions’ roars and the multifaceted language of killer whales – are pitted against electronic percussion and synthesizer-laden ostinati. Supple strings give way to sepulchral bass sonorities – worthy to test many a subwoofer. The resultant music is fractured, disquieting, and often quite powerful.”

Love the cover artwork as well!
Hilarious that Chris chose to post that remixed track of Bibio’s. I’ve been meaning to post it and a follow up to it – giving props and honor to one of the forefathers of this beat movement we so often document here. DJ Cam. I’ve been playing a double disc album of his for the last month or so entitled Mad Blunted Jazz. If you’re not familiar with Cam, DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, go do some research. These guys bridged the gap between “traditional” hip hop and where we are now. Strictly beats had an amazing write up a month or so ago on the different stages we are seeing in Hip Hop / Beatmaking / production. Scroll down that page and you’ll see it.
Without further delay – spend some time and research some of Cam’s releases.
New tracks by Bibio with several remixes off Ambivalence Avenue have arrived! The Apple and the Tooth was released last week and I was excited to see that it included Lone remixes as well as Letherette and Keaver & Brause. Not sure how to classify the effort though, an extended play with remix treats, possibly an LP with guest producers, or maybe a new class called get the fucking shit cause its cool to listen too, a.k.a CTLTP.

Mitch started playing this album when we were working in the studio last week and I was immediately smitten. Both Mitch and I went to Loyola University in New Orleans which has a very well known music program. Turns out Brian is an alumni of the program and one of the better musicians I have heard all year. He’s an accomplished jazz musician and this album seems like foray out of that genre.
I snagged this nice review of Brian’s sensibilities off of Hollywood Drum. “Blade’s jazz sensibilities influence his approach to pop more notably than the contrary. He possesses a hallmark ability to channel music in perpetual motion that, while unique as jazz musician, is revelational in the pop realm. Blade never dwells or regresses behind a drumkit; his playing embraces and personifies the ephemeral nature of time. Hearing, seeing him perform is a philosophical study in letting go and allying with change.”

New tunes by Oxnard, CA producer Kan Kick. This track is actually from a remixes album he just put out but the instrumental can be found on Beautiful: Opus of Love Deeper Than Flesh Vol. 1.
Grun-tu-molani have released a new album entitled Varelse Dans. Some notable tracks are on the album – we’re liking the first track Chupacabra. As the album artwork suggests, the entire album is about animals.

We get submissions – sometimes too many for us to keep up with. Occasionally we’ll get those tracks or albums that catch the ear, cause a nod, require us to put things on repeat. I haven’t been a huge fan of the Hip Hop scene in the UK – but I do know it’s maturing and getting better and better. Pat D and Lady Paradox have crafted a solid album in Soulscapes and Jazz breaks. It does as the name implies – investigates those other genres and pulls from them really well. The album is set to release Dec 8th by the small label called A Bridge too Far Recordings it seems as though they’re putting out some solid releases so keep your eyes and ears peeled to them

Having grown up in the 80’s, I have soft spot in my heart for anything reminiscent of that time period. It was nice when synthesizers were real analog and drum machine’s just had a few presets.
Looks like I am not the only one feeling a little nostalgic. I seem to have found a bunch of artists bringing back the 80’s sound. Give Data, Anorak, or the band Jupiter a listen. Break that IZOD shirt out of storage and bring the fucking 80’s back.

I was recently listening to the jazz station in San Francisco, KCSM 91.1 and this track was hitting the crescendo when i tuned in. Up until that point I had never heard someone thrash on the organ like this. It was just one of those moments that made me excited about music again. I even called the station to find out who it was. Jimmy Smith. So legit.
I like this little rocked out song by Zoe Leela from Berlin. There is something really nice about her vocals and the straight forward production. I feel this kinda of music would sound really be nice live, it has that very human element to it.
I’ve been a fan of this NYC artist for some time. His latest solo release titled The Music Scene is a progressive effort on classic Blockhead. Since he began his career, Blockhead has always stayed true to his craft and to the style in which he executes it. I won’t need to go into any history, as we all know it.
This album is full of great tracks that range from moody to upbeat. If you are looking for something to set a scene too, this would be a great pick. You’ll find distorted samples, beats, guitar riffs, great mixing and everything else you come to expect from hip-hop inspired electronic.

Sounds like: the tears that fall from your emo face on to your laptop. or nordic flute music with a hip hop edge…either or…

Berlin artist Mokke produces some wonderful downtempo!
This album has been a pleasure to listen too. At work, on a run, or 30,000 feet in the air. It provides nice ear texture to visualize the world to. All tracks offer something a little different than the last in the way they sound and in tempo BUT consistent on the beat driven theme. I personally like that in experimental electronic. You will also appreciate rich tones and the mix of samples included on this album.
A pretty impressive go at a first album, at that!

First Space Shit on the Moon is a 30 track mixtape FREE download. I just came across this recently, and thought I’d share although I believe it was released several months ago. Anyway, it’s tough to keep track of all the awesome music out there and since I come to the party a bit late sometimes, it’s better than not at all. This mixtape is full of wonky beats and funk. Lots of interesting sounds to consume.
Be sure to show a lil’ love to Amsterdam artist fLako for his effort – although belated.
