Top Ten

So I combed through my favorite albums of 2009. It has occurred to me as I look over the list that picking favorites is kinda nutty. As I write this I’m wondering if selecting the cream of the bunch helps you as a reader filter things. One big ole list can be a little daunting. Ok, OK, I’m selecting my favs of the favs – I do think ranking stuff as most people do . . . is for the birds. Oh my 10 is really 12.

Grizzly Bear – Vekatimest
Pheonix – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Maxwell – BLACKsummers’night
The Clonious – Between the Dots
Hudson Mohawke – Butter
Dirty Projectors – Bitte Orca
Mount Kimbie – Maybes
Mount Kimbie – Sketch on Glass EP
Astro Nautico – Atlantics EP
The XX – XX
Glen Porter – Falling Down
Bibio – Ambivalence Avenue

————————————————————————-

TTV – Immolate yourself
U2 – No line on the Horizon
Buillon – Young Haeartache E.P.
Yppah – They Know What Ghost Know
Theresa Andersson – Hummingbird , GO!
SiFunk & Garmunkle – Blooperz
Passion Pit – Manners
Mos Def – The Ecstatic
Deradoorian – Mind Raft
Julian Winter – L’art pour l’art
Lushlife – Cassette City (Bonus Track Version)
Brian Blade – Mama Rosa
Dak – Standthis
Ben Frost – By the Throat
Mike Slott – Luck 9teen
Flying Lotus – Decademix by GLK

Inspiration

Toro Y Moi just gets it. I mean his music seems so effortless and cohesive. Nothing seems at all forced. His new album Causers of This just dropped last week and is already a strong front runner for a slot in my top 10 of 2010.

Dreamy synths, airy, glitchy, melodic vocals, and non-annoying repetitive loops that end just when you feel they should.

Toro Y Moi is also working on a side project under the name Lessins that seems to draw inspiration from Daft Punk, and French 80’s electric synth-pop. I’m not sure when we can expect anything from this venture but when ever we do it will be something special.

He has a great way of filtering things that we’ve heard before into sequences that are new to the ear.

This album will not disappoint you at all. Grab it
here with bonus tracks!

Top Ten

It’s hard to believe another year is gone. It’s even harder to look back on the music that caught my attention in 2009 and narrow it down to a top ten. It was much, much harder than I imagined it would be this year. There was a lot of really great music that came out.

After sleeping on the list and changing it, sleeping some more, and changing some more, I finally have a list to present to you in no particular order that I’m somewhat comfortable with. I’d like to add that every year I create a list I wish I could redo and update the almost immediately after posting but I digress.

2009 Top Ten
Miike Snow – Miike Snow
Neon Indian – Psychic Chasms
Maxwell – Blacksummers’ Night
Fink – Sort of Revolution
Wale – Attention Deficit
The Temper Trap – Conditions
Hudson Mohawke – Butter
JJ – JJ Nº 2
The xx – xx
Bibio – Ambivalence Avenue

Honorable Mention
(or other music that’s held me down & done me well)
Me’ Shell NdegeOcello – Devil’s Halo
Kyp Malone – Rain Machine
BLK JKS – After Robots
Oh No – Dr. No’s Ethiopium
Clipse – Til the Casket Drops
Nicolay – City Lights Vol. 2 Shibuya

Track of the day

Holly shit! Another UK artists to post! This is Blue Daisy and he just released his E.P. Strings Detached right before the new year. This cat is gonna blow up in 2010, there is no doubt. His sound is very hypnotic and the tracks are composed brilliantly, a great way to end and start a new decade.

I was struck immediately by the richness of the sound and the dark tones accompanied by harmonic value. There are only four tracks on this extended play but I have already listened to them ten times over. If this album is a sign of things to come then I’m sure we can expected excellent production, fresh beats and very interesting music indeed.

The Beats

UK artist Joker is producing some heaters. Thought this was worth sharing. A lil’ dub grime-hop single for your 2010 mixtapes. Apparently there is a full length due out soon but it appears he is on an aggressive touring schedule now.

Late Night Creepin

I have been a fan of Tricky for a long time, but he has fallen off my radar. The last I heard from Tricky did not grab my attention, and I lost touch. This new record has reinvigorated my interest, to the point of being addictive. This time Tricky collaborates with Florida-based duo South Rakkas Crew, bringing the Dancehall sounds to the mix. Some of the songs are almost pop, but the album as a whole keeps it’s edge and is downright dirty. The female vocals on some of the tracks are almost in the guilty pleasure category. I am satisfied that the record is pretty interesting all the way throught. Out now on the respected label Domino.

Noteworthy

This young Maryland producer’s sound might be best described as “Romantic slapback music, born in the incredible worldwide vibe environment of 1983.” because nothing would be more fitting. It’s how he describes his work and after listening to his latest E.P., Bare Feet, I’d say that’s fairly accurate. His standout track, Bare Feet, is a great mix of retro and future sound with lots of soul. The album as a whole reflects his hip-hop approach to producing and an electronic sensibility that adds a bit of interest.

Track of the day

Taken from Wikipedia . . .

Jay Electronica has yet to release a full-length album but has released one official single to date, “Exhibit A”. His music so far has been made available through the internet, either through being leaked to what URB magazine describes as “obscure web forums”, or through an appearing and disappearing myspace page (currently two seem to be in existence, at /jayelect and at /jayelectronica). Badu has questioned whether he ever will release, in her words, “actual albums”.

Originally from the Magnolia Projects in New Orleans, Louisiana, he has lived in Atlanta, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Denver, and Detroit, where he recorded his Style Wars-era music with several J Dilla beats, meeting the producer subsequently to ask for permission to use the recordings as a demo. Detroit is where Electronica met producer/engineer Mike “Chav” Chavarria, who introduced him to both J Dilla and Mr. Porter, and who is now a regular collaborator.

Jay Electronica first gained significant attention through Act 1: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge), made available on a myspace page in 2007. It is 15 continuous minutes of music, without drums, built from Jon Brion’s soundtrack to the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. There are five segments or movements, marked by changes in music and mood, raps by Electronica, and occasional snippets of sampled dialogue (children arguing in Kurdish, Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka). The first segment is spoken word by Just Blaze and Erykah Badu describing the artist over piano music.
