Beautifully dark video with visuals that are as potent as the lyrics & poetry.

Favourites

When I first heard the track 86 from Fred Yaddaden I honestly thought it was a track from the 70’s. I was shocked to find that the it and the rest of the content on the album was created between 2003 & 2005 but took almost 4 years to drop. I’m just glad that it saw the light of day. This album is getting major love in the form of spins on the ol’ iPod and had I known about this album before now it would have earned a spot on my Top Ten of 09 list…but to quote Ness “WTF is a Top Ten?”

From his Myspace
What would say a rose if it could talk? It would talk about water, looks and words. It would talk about lights going out and days starting and restarting again. It would talk about scissors, cuddles, about discussions between human beings and flowers. It would talk for hours… About those same hours and about the silence that follows. It would talk about cycles and life. It would talk about forgetting. It would talk about thirst, about the end, folded in a bin, an eye into the ephemeral, memory of an intention… Indeed, what would say a rose if it could talk?

Track of the day

Honestly I don’t know much about this group and I don’t need to. This song is beautifully infectious in both lyric and aesthetics. Shout out to Tarik of 88.9 Radio Milwaukee for the heads up on this track and group. I hope to hear much more from Trilogy in the near future.

Visit Their Myspace

Also, you’d be doing yourself a great disservice by not going to listen to the Trilogy Mixtape Vol-1 they put together. Honestly one of my favorite mixes of the past few years.

Top Ten

2009 was a huge year for music. Dubstep certainly shot into the stratosphere, gaining massive popularity in the UK, Vancouver, and in the US. (to name a few) San Francisco/Bay Area has quickly become the epicenter of bass culture in the States, sharing the torch with a myriad of other cities like Austin, NYC, Denver, LA, Seattle, Detroit, and the list goes on. What’s most exciting about the genre is how rapidly it’s warping and evolving. From rich harmonics to chainsaw melodies, new crossover styles are emerging constantly.
These 10 tracks were some of my favorites to play at shows in 09’
Cheers to a wonderful year!

1. Hyph Mngo – Joy Orbison
2. Everything We Stand For – TRG
3. Triple 116 – Elemental
4. Cloverfield – Richie August
5. Taylor Rain – Jazzsteppa
6. Wipe Your Tears – Mistabishi
7. Agnus Dei – Eskmo
8. The Blank (16bit Remix) – Skism
9. Spaceship Earth – The Widdler
10. Cold Rocker – George Lenton

Match Up

We are not talking about diamonds here! Get to a minute in on this track, and get ready for one dirty bass gem. Borgore from Israel might not get the label Greatest Rapper Alive™, but he makes some interesting music that is not the typical dubstep.

Bleep Bloop Blip

We’ve been a lil sleepy on Travis Stewart, better known by his stage name machinedrum, sometimes capitalized Machine Drum. This is a bio of him we took from Wikipedia He is an electronic musician and one of the artists who helped launch Merck Records. He is also the owner of New York-based Normrex Records1. He has also sold rights to some of his music to Adult Swim for tracks played during some of their program interludes.
His debut album was released under one of his aliases, Syndrone, and was soon licensed by European IDM label called Djak-Up-Bitch. This is a nice ditty by the NY based producer.

You can learn more about him at his Portal

You can purchase his latest effort Do you want to 1, 2 on itunes.

Noteworthy

Svetnik just released a follow up from last years Lo-Fi Stuff which was buzz-worthy amongst underground listeners and producers.

This release is noteworthy as well. The album is full of beat driven tracks and feels a bit more evolved and expressive. He includes a vocal track and has intermediate skits which he uses as texture. You can definitely hear the potential growing in this producer from Berlin. He hit us up through email and answered a few questions so we’d like share the conversation.

BTW it’s a free download and the artwork is by YYY.

Where are you living and producing?

In one of the most beautiful and inspiring citys of the world : Berlin.

What’s the music scene there like?

Very open-minded and multicultural. A lot of great musicians are living here and the clubbing scene is one of the best in the world. Especially the dubstep scene is booming here right now. Some excellent Beat makers are living here too, take for example fLako or Suff Daddy. I also think it’s one of the best things for an upcoming musician to have the people who influence your sound in your neighbourhood and to have the oppurtunity to easily visit all of their shows and connect with them.

Who are your influencers?

At the moment I am pretty flashed by the organic sounds of Hubert Daviz. He got this dusty, lazy sound full of interesting percussion and jazzy, laid back samples.
In general I’m influenced by everything, there are visual influences like stuff from Teebs, Alice Dufay or Basquiat and of course sound influences which go from classy Hip Hop over Jazz/Soul to today’s uk bass movement and some dirty deep house like Motor City Drum Ensemble.

What inspired Blueprint?

Life and it’s good as well as it’s bad moments.

What were some challenges you faced when making the album?

There was a point where making music became a daily routine to me and this had no good impact on my sound. I’m glad that this is over. I now see every piece of music that I make as very special on it’s own, reflecting my thoughts and feelings.

Thirteen songs seems long for an E.P., why did you choose this format?

It is indeed pretty long for an E.P. But the reason to call it E.P was that I feel that this is not just a beat tape. But it’s also not an LP. It is somewhere in between. In my opinion a musician really has to have found his own sound to make a good LP. And I haven’t yet. I’m still experimenting a lot but I think my sound is developing and slowly taking shape. That was the reason for me to release it as EP under the name “Blueprint”, this is my very own blueprint for my future sound.

Have any big plans for 2010?

Yes I do have some plans for 2010. There would be the launch of my german only blog . This will come out really cool, I think. We want to support independent art and music and write about the stuff that moves us in hope to move other people, so they stop sleeping. A small netlabel is in the making too and I also want to start organizing some events here in Berlin in order to play more dj sets and share my love for music. Concerning my own music I will keep on making stuff and see what happens.

Noteworthy

While this free “mixtape” may have carefully borrowed beats from some well known producers it also features original production that makes this whole project seem more like a proper album. The whole album is full of delightful gems that will have you pouncing on the rewind like “I know I’m not FOREVER but at least I got TODAY.”

You can cop it for FREE and if I cosign it why wouldn’t you want it?

Inspiration

By now you’ve all surely heard about the mad quest Madlib is on for 2010. I thought I’d still give it a little shine here though simply because he’s one of the hardest working people in the music business.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with the details, Madlib is set to release a 12-CD/6-LP series on Stones Throw titled The Madlib Medicine Show. The albums are scheduled to drop once a month and will feature remixes, new tracks, jazz, funk; basically everything Lib is known for. The first edition is supposed to act as a prelude for the forthcoming Guilty Simpson+Madlib album titled
OJ Simpson.

Medicine show will also be released on limited edition vinyl each hand-screened by Hit+Run

Christmas will be here again soon before you know it…this would make for an amazing gift for any Madlib fan.

Match Up

I stumbled upon this remix by Nosaj Thing of one of our favorite groups of 2009. It seems as though Nosaj is dabbling with more of a mainstream sound and line of production with several recent remixes. Take note – we might be seeing the emergence of one of the next big producers.

The Arts

Massive Attack Paradise Circus from sabakan on Vimeo.

Trip-Hop legends Massive Attack have released their new video for “Paradise Circus” (ft. Hope Sandoval) in support of their album, Heligoland, set to release February 9th via EMI’s Virgin Records. The Toby Dye directed video features former porn star, Georgina Spelvin, and her candid look on filming the infamous adult film, The Devil in Miss Jones. Original shots of the ’73 hit (NSFW) are interlaced with Spelvin’s honest take on her physical and emotional state during the production of the film nearly forty years ago.

Heligoland, Massive Attack’s highly-anticipated 5th studio album, will feature guest vocals from Damon Albarn, Marina Topely-Bird, Guy Garvey and Tunde Adebimpe. Longtime cohort, Horace Andy, is also set to return alongside Massive Attack founding members Robert Del Naja (3D) and Grand Marshall (Daddy G). The prelude to Heligoland, the Splitting the Atom EP, is available now.

Track of the day

From NYC producer FaltyDL comes a mix of of soul, garage and dubstep. This track is a cross between the dark feelings of Burial, and catchiness of early Aphex Twin. Taken from the LP Love Is a Liability, which I am pretty much feeling from beginning to end.

News

We go about our daily lives, run on the treadmill, eat something at our favorite restaurant. We do not – cannot understand the severity of the situation in Haiti. Having been a part of a natural disaster in New Orleans – I can only try to imagine what is happening there.

Just take 5 mins of your day and think about Haiti and donate either love or money to the Haitian community. Haiti was one of the poorest countries prior to this quake. We have collected some links of interest for you that might help in Donation.

Haiti’s regional, historical, and ethnolinguistic position is unique for several reasons. It was the first independent nation in Latin America, the first post-colonial independent black-led nation in the world, and the only nation whose independence was gained as part of a successful slave rebellion.
