Welcome to Friday everyone. We made it another week and I believe we probably all deserve a little something to help us relax and unwind. Luckily I have just the thing. Light Of Day by Jesse Futerman. I’m labeling it a podcast but don’t get it twisted this thing is an ALBUM. You might remember his music from the last podcast we dropped from Ben (A.K.A. Jack High) a few days back.

Hailing from Toronto Jesse Futerman is only 17 years old. His music would suggest otherwise as its patience and calmness stinks of a person twice his age. We should keep an eye on him for sure. He’s going to be dangerous.

We have been working for about a year to bring this album to you and we hope you enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed the process of getting everything just right.

Grab the ALBUM HERE.

Ben was kind enough to whip up a mix that I would think took a few days to compile. He did it in what seemed to be a couple minutes. Ben goes by many aliases such as Jack High and Singing Statues to name a few. He’s cooking up some things with Teebs at the moment. Needless to say, we’re excited to hear the outcome.

This is a mix to be enjoyed while relaxing in the sun, driving to the beach, or when needing to unwind from a stressful day.

Tracklisting as follows:

Vincent Gallo – I Wrote This Song For The Girl Paris Hilton
Ben Thomas – Untitled
Radiohead – Reckoner (Lukid remix)

Flying Lotus – Spin Cycles
Talvihorros – The Blue Cathedral
Teebs – Arthurs Birds
Diaclectic – God Is My Friend
Bnjmin – Infinite a Void
Darkstar – Videotape

1000names was generous enough to put together a mix for YYY and now it has arrived. Cookie Pussy Mix is an hour long journey into the mind of Bulgarian natives Casio Blaster and 99 Mistakes. We’ve posted on this duo before, but now its time for a formal introduction. Below is an interview we recently scored, mix cover art by YYY.

Where did you get the alias 1000names?

It comes from series of works made in the mid 80’s by the English sculptor Anish Kapoor.

Where are you currently living?

Sofia, Bulgaria but also everywhere else here and there.

What’s the culture there like? The music scene?

Mainly house and d’n‘b stuff, a little bit of old skool, funk, hip hop parties, but things are about to change as more and more people get involved in different styles.

What sparked your interest in beat making?

It’s a life time adventure, but as 1000names we makes beats for 3 years now. 99 Mistakes has been producing for 4 years before that and painted meanwhile. Casio Blaster started drumming at the age 14 until he decided to stop sweating 3 years ago.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Old stuff, space era, from 50s atom panic till 80s-90s game graphicizm.

When do you find time to produce music?

All night till dawn, try to stay on it all the time.

Is there anyone producing music today you would like to collaborate with?

We like to jam on stage with Fulgeance and Lilea Narative and thats the kind of collab we enjoy most at the moment.

If you could produce an artists album who would that be?

Somebody who would move in our studio and live dedicatedly for the project.

What movie soundtrack would you like to remix?

Taxi driver.

If you could only use 5 albums to sample from your whole career, what albums would they be?

Raymond Scott – Manhattan research
Sun Ra – Lanquidity
Curtis Mayfield – Curtis
Gil Scott-Herron – Pieces of a man
Tuff Crew – Phan jam(so def)

Tell us a briefly your goals for 2009, your thoughts on the global music scene, and anything interesting you’d like to share about yourself.

On 27th of february our debut album will be out for Eklektik Records, then March we plan a tour in France and around Europe. hope to get on some good festivals in the summer and then some more EP 7 inch for the same label. for us global music situation gets more and more unusual, innovative and independent. with direct contact between the artist and the audience through i-net. collaborations and quick interaction between diverse producers lead to fast developed directions. its exiting to live in the musical present future days.

We’ve been fans of Ivana XL for a while now and decided to ask her throw us some tracks for a podcast for you all. Then we got our man Geebz to put the podcast together. Good looking Geebz! This podcast is a little different in that we asked her to send us some of her favorite tracks and some of her own, well she did us one better…She sent us some of her favorites and a NEVER BEFORE RELEASED or HEARD track of her own called Two Little Dogs to end the podcast off! So please enjoy the relaxing mellow tunes on this beautiful Tuesday morning. She was also kind enough to answer some Q+A’s below. . .

The songs that are in the podcast, what do they do for you that others don’t?

These are all songs that are on heavy rotation on my boombox at the moment. They also happen to be songs that friends of mine have turned me on to recently. They all blew me away instantly.. especially the France Gall.

Where is your favorite place to listen to music?

In a car! It’s rare that I get to ride in a car, living in New York. I used to drive (and crash) Plymouths, mostly. I really miss being completely surrounded by speakers, and MOVING. I was a terrible driver, so it’s better this way, for you and for me.

Where is your favorite place to write music?

Anywhere where I know people can’t hear me! My building has ears. (My neighbors ears. And the people outside my windows ears, sometimes.) I get really embarrassed when I get knocked at on the wall or ceiling. I think the bathroom is a nice spot though. Great acoustics.

What inspires you other than music?

I guess anyone that listens to my stuff hears that it’s 99% about love/heartbreak. So THAT, but also just human relationships in general. Most people have had their heart broken or you know, destroyed haha. We’ve all broken hearts, or will, and we are all going to lose people that we love for one reason or another and we’ve got to deal with it. So nobody is really alone in this. It’s the greatest thing to have figured out.

If you had to pick one song to represent you the best what would that song be?

That’s tough!..but automatically I think of Guantanamera. My mom used to sing it to me all the time. It was the first song I learned to play on guitar. It was always sort of floating around in my life.

If you had the choice to put a band together to back you on an album who would you pick?

I’d choose Will Oldham. I’d ask him to play every instrument, and sing, teach me to play the piano, and then I’d ask him to be my husband. I don’t see why he wouldn’t want to just drop every genius thing he’s got going on now and go with me? Also, I really enjoy two person bands. There’s something very special about watching just two people on a stage do everything.

If you had the choice to select any musician (alive or dead) in the world to produce a Ivana XL Album who would it be and why?

Robert Pollard. Every Guided By Voices album has been hugely important for me. I love the fact that some songs don’t even clock in at a minute long. Sometimes you say what you have to say in 58 seconds.. ya know? If it wasn’t for his music and production I’d probably be writing like verse/chorus/verse/bridge/chorus, now. The formula. Which isn’t always so much fun.

You have a nice amount of new songs out… Do you plan on putting another album out anytime soon and any idea of what it may be called?

I plan on just releasing songs as they come on itunes and Myspace until I can produce an album properly. I’m calling the EP I just put out “demo style” even. Eventually I’d love to sit down and take all the demos I have, pick 11 or so and re-do them. It’s a matter of money though. Waiting on the jackpot.

You’re rich and you love music so you decide to put on a Dave Chapelle like show of all of your favorite artists…Who would be on the bill and what would the event be called?

It would be called “Amazing Sandwich”. I’d ask Lucinda Williams, Emily Haines, Guided By Voices, Nirvana, Me Without You, Mozart, Leonard Cohen, Broken Social Scene… many more.. the sandwich would be truly amazing.

We’ve just received a nice little mix from an up and coming beat maker from Maryland. The following is a little interview and following a little interview and track listing.

_______________________________

Who are you?

I go by the alias of 00Genesis. I’m a beatmaker/ producer/ artist/ song writer. I’ve been doing beats for a couple of years now and am currently associated with international artists such as:

Jneiro Jarel
Muhsinah
Kidnap (Slumgullion)
fLako
Jackhigh

Where are you located and how old are you?

I live in Maryland, US, but I stay in my imagination aka “The Rabbit Hole.” I’m 18.

Who are some inspirations of yours – musically – current and past

It’s weird because I never thought about making beats until I heard Madvillainy in 04 and until I actually became surrounded by other producers. I just knew that this was for me and I dedicated a lot of time and was driven (and still am)!! I’m grinding it out!

But I’m definitely influenced by good music…soul driven music. In particular I look up to artists like Madlib, Jneiro Jarel, Flying Lotus, Aphex Twin, Prefuse….all the pioneers and current (dope) artists of this now “Beat Generation” movement. I also listen to a fair amount of Jazz, Indie Rock and Dance music.

Have you any insight into emerging music scenes?

Well being apart of this current beat movement, I’m just concerned in general. We all have to put our best foot forward and keep elevating so that this shit is really a movement and not just a scene….I fucking hate scenes and fads. This is real though, and I trust that everyone else (who is making moves) will respect the art and produce quality music that has longevity.

If you could put two producers into a steel cage, who would they be and who do you think would emerge victorious?

I would put Timbaland vs. Pharell…no Timbaland vs. NERD (make it fair since Timbaland is all swole now)

The fight would be intense, but in the final phases of the battle when everyone is tired and ready to deliver the finishing blow, the cage would suddenly collapse and the only support holding it up would be Timbaland’s diesel arms. So Pharell and company would try to take advantage and straight demolish him (remember it’s 3 on 1)…but Timbaland would transform into a giant dread-locked gorilla with a glass eye and a robotic arm and

….this could go on, but fuck it.

If records where edible, what would you have for an appetizer, entree, and dessert? What would you wash it all down with?

appetizer: Bob Marley

entree: Al Green

dessert: Minni Ripperton

drink: Roberta Flack

HEY BIG SPENDER! Horns, drum kicks, sassy and seductive choruses collide in an aggressive mix by San Francisco producer Geebz. Titled Big Spender, the track was originally composed for Geebz’s Shellmound crew but caught the ears of YYY and the rest is E.P. history. Geebz jumped at request and put together an extended play inspired by the show tunes of Sweet Charity. And it worked. The E.P. is full of production surprises, great mixing, and clever use of dialogue. Even Joe Namath makes a guest appearance in one of the many samples brought back to life in Big Spender.

Unique sounding and interestingly mixed, Big Spender feels a bit like an electronic, big band, hip-hop mash-up on broadway. Geebz definitely brought some thunder. We recently asked him his thoughts on the process. When asked how he felt making the E.P., Geebz replied “ Frustrating. Having a concept made it tougher. It’s easier to throw a bunch of joints together, but to tell one story was a little harder.” When asked how he felt about the mix, Geebz reflected “Yeah. I like High Roller like a mutha’. I still don’t feel like I’m done with it, but I could work on it forever and it’s just gonna be.” He’d like to give props to YYY for the respect, and Ev Murder for the mastering.

We’ve been holding onto this one for a little bit – but now seems like a good time to release it. Those of you who have heard of him – Jack High from the UK has been making some quality Beats for a bit now. we were fortunate enough to have him provide one of our best Podcasts to date with some exclusive music in it. Have a spin and enjoy. Have a glance at some Q+A’s below as well . . .

What Inspires you in this current progression of beatmaking?

When I make beats its like a chanelling, I’m not really that conscious of what I’ve made until its finished. Its like trusting whatever comes out when you stop thinking about whether the sound is right or wrong, going with the flow I guess, the inspiration comes from that. I think the music also requires the listener to do the same so it can heighten consciousness, people like Flying Lotus are really taking that to another level. The main inspiration is black music, and J Dilla especially. He created a whole new sound, when I first heard his music it was a real awakening and I’m still discovering new dimensions to his music all the time.

Who would you classify as contemporaries, peers, people you look up to?

In the last few years I have met some amazing musicians/producers that are on a similar creative path, mostly thanks to myspace! Some of the people who I am constantly blown away by that I’m proud to call friends: 1000names, Teebs, Kiraneris, Berghem, Selfsays, Architeq, Ki en ra and loads more (sorry if I missed you). Some other people that I recommend you should check out are: Elan – you can hear her in the selection, amazing vocalist/songwriter. I think she’s destined for big things. myspace.com/elanmottley Adi the beats – he has a ridiculous remix of phat kat’s nightmare, I meant to include that in the selection but I forgot, be sure to checkit at myspace.com/adidickpresentsthebeats Samoyed – amazing minimal, ambient(but much much more) music, he has a new album out, check myspace.com/samoyed

What would you call this new form of music?

I don’t think it really matters what its called, in fact when the media coins a name for any genre you usually see a decline in the creativity and lots of people follow the structure to whoever is successful in that genre. I hope we can keep it creative and just do what we feel

Where are you located?

England, Planet Earth, Solar(Sun) System haha. Peace to the aliens

What lies ahead for you? Future goals / global domination type stuff . . .

At the moment I’m working on several projects, bnjmin is my new alias for house based music inspired by Theo Parrish, Move d, Lawrence etc. I’m also collaborating with 1000names, Teebs and Kiraneris with some releases planned which I’m really excited about. In the future I hope to work on all kinds of music, I’m getting really into rock music again, sonic youth, my bloody valentine, the smiths etc.. so I hope to do some live instrument based music again as I used to as a kid.

I have known Dert for at least 2 or 3 years now and I connected with him initially because of his music. I remember I was hooked on his “Sometimes I Rhyme Slow” album and I reached out to him. He ended up being a cool person. Since I have had the pleasure of acquiring his whole collection. Check my last.fm playlist if you don’t believe me, please believe me. He is top in my overall tracks played and with good reason. His shit is dope.

1. Please introduce yourself for those that don’t know about the POWER of DERT.

hello, my name is donald baker. some people call me dert. my most well known projects are krs-one’s album called “life”, the jose gonzalez remix album “sometimes i rhyme slow” and a pink floyd beat tape called “dert floyd: the westside of the moon”

2. By the title of the podcast we know you are from the West Coast but where specifically?

i am from west covina california, a suburb about 25 miles east of los angeles. i currently live in downtown los angeles.

3. What is really going on in L.A.? I mean in the underbelly music wise not the shit they print in spin and Rolling stone. Who is nice but not getting their proper shine?

not a whole lot, its pretty hollywood out here and honestly i stay in a lot lately. but some of my current favorites are the stones throw cats like med, madlib, jrocc etc. blu, pacific division, daedalus, gajah from acid reign, triune, the visionaries, giant panda, pigeon john and such.

as far as getting shine, of course the freestyle fellowship and abstract rude never got the respect they deserve for innovating west coast hip hop. i can’t really name many new (post 2000) artists that i think should get more shine since nowadays the market is so over saturated no one REALLY shines unless you just get super huge.

4. I am lucky enough to have your whole catalog of music and MORE. Thanks! But I am itching for more man, what do you have coming down the pipeline?

well i think you have the stuff i am not ashamed of. lol.
right now i am working on a project tentatively called today’s the day. me on the beats and surreal on the raps (which some may know of his album with the production duo the sound providers). i also plan to have another instrumental album done this year, i think it will be called, well i dont know what it will be called. i also did another remix for the band west indian girl for their song sofia. i don’t know when they will put out their next remix project.

the state of the industry has kind of worn me down and so i am not as productive as i used to be, but i have recently met a woman that has inspired me to keep at it. so we’ll see what else.

5. Give us a look into the recently played list of your iPod, what’s it look like?

well i have about 8 gigs of psych rock, soul and other stuff i downloaded i have not even unzipped but that is more for sampling. i’ve been on an acoustic kick lately, i put back on jose gonzalez and some nick drake. the skyphone album, wye oak, afta-1, vampire weekend, the new black keys, radiohead in rainbows and various classic hip hop albums mixed in (this week it was illmatic)

The homie from France came through with a nice lil selection of beats for you beat nerds out there. Pull out your ipod pocket protector put some extra tape on those bottle bottom specs and bob yo heads. Preview his latest beat “I Luv U”, sooo bangin. I have it on repeat! It was made for his one and only love Alice Dufay, a fantastic artist and designer. You may recognize her artwork for the last 1000names album cover. They will be launching a microsite soon called “Beats & Faces” where you can find links between musicians, related artists, and designers such as Débruit, Lilea Narrative, Onra, Kelpe, Powell, Architeq, Matthew David, 1000names….etc. Deeeam! Can’t wait. Watch out for the cats on Musique Large this year.

Download Mix

1. So, tell us a little about you and where you’re coming from.

I’m Fulgeance, beatmaker/producer from France.
I have many projects right now; Peter Digital Orchestra, more electro, Fulgeance on Musique Large and Connecticut, electro hip hop band with Dj Blockbass (Scratch), DonDaNone (MC) and Pilou Masta (Drums).
I come from funk and jazz first as a bass player, then I started to play more House and Electro stuff as a dj. Then Hip Hop and Electronica hit me up from “Kick Snare 1/2 Music”, Hey hey…and I started to compose and create my style.

2. What about upcoming projects? Do you have something new to follow up on the Chico E.P.?

About Fulgeance, that’s signed on Musique Large, I signed for 3 EPs and an album, then I think that we’ll release a Remix EP.
The next one will be “LARGE EP”, out in September.
I have just remixed tracks from Kelpe(DC Rec.) and Architeq (Tirk Rec), and I’m now on a Clause Four Remix, on DC too. So I’m really busy these days, and after that I have to manage too Connecticut and Peter Digital, you know it’s a full time job!!! Hey hey hey!!! Then you add myspace addicts, gigs and com to that.
I think that one day I’ll be schyzophrenic…yes…..hahahaha !!

3. What’s up with France.. why is the music there so dope!?

I dunno man…I think that when you are not from France, you always find French music “new”. But I think we are a little retarded about new music styles, France have been always following the UK and US music style…But it’s true that for the last 5 years, electro like dancin’ music is more interesting, more French are about to push up the style.
But like everywhere, the underground is always the key. I think France has always tried to keep culture alive, even if politics seem different about that now… But you know the US and UK slaps us every month with new dope shit and music!!!!

Seriously, who should we be looking out for this year?

From France, got new hip hop, I advise you to check out my friends Powell, Débruit, Onra, Le Neko, Cupp Cave and Dalcym from Belgium, Lilea Narrative, D3CCPT and Tayreeb.
In other styles, check Gablé (Loaf Records), Kim Novak, Souleance,Chlorine Free, Komori (Rolax Rec)….there are so many …
I don’t wanna fill your page!! haha

4. Technology… Is it good or is it wack?

Owwww….sometimes it’s good, I’d like to have more exciting machines and new software to produce hard and well… But since I use oldschool MPC’s live, and just two pieces of software for composing, being limited is a good way to go straight to what u want…you see…I don’t lose my concentration.
I’d even like to develop one day, to be a geek, a beat-nerd into his beat-cave!!! haha
Wack or good.. definitely, it must be good…hey hey!!

So BIG UP To YES YES Y’ALL, keep spread the word about new music and dope young producers !!!!

Where do I begin? We received an email from this cat named Ise recently with a beat enclosed. We were incredibly impressed and after several emails back and forth, we asked Ise to create our fourth podcast – he accepted. This also marks the first of what hopefully will be several Q+A’s we have with artists. Ise has created an amazing mix that you should download NOW. Without further delay – here’s our interview with the talented young producer followed by a link to his podcast. We hope you enjoy.

Where are you located and how old are you?

I’m from europe but for some reason I dont want to say exactly where. I’m going to be 25 in couple of weeks but I feel like 15 max!

What  are your feelings about this new form of beat making – this more “spirtual” side of music as you said?

I waited for it for a long-long time. The world around us – the consiousness is changing and so is the music because we all are just vibrations. I love that the beat can be really simple these days – drums, atmospheric, some clicks and sounds from the street and BOOM.. you are feelin it! If the producer is honest then the SOUL gets into the beat. Its the way to record your emotions. Be in the moment! DONT TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY! Thats the key to new places in music and in life too… the cosmos is calling for the children. Its the wake up call!

What are your future plans – when does the E.P. drop?

The first project is called KI EN RA. its in old sumerian and means Planet of the Sun. I included 2 MC-s : Tableek from Maspyke and a guy from detroit – Selfsays. They both have dope lyrics! Its going to drop around mid-summer I guess – so watch out!

The next thing im going to do is a collab with Jackhigh. We are totally on the same wavelenght like he said so its going to be a fun project.

What’s your favorite color?

It varies from sky blue to violet. Some people have eyes that have this special color too..I suppose the color that can be felt not seen – thats the one I love the most…

While I was working in Amsterdam a few months back I noticed someone at WK sent an email about a beat they had created. Of course it got my attention. After a few days I finally met Franklin Groen. Ladies and Gents – I think you should take note – we have one of the ( dare I say it ) most talented young beatmakers / producers living in Holland at the moment. I’ve requested a Podcast from Mr. FS Green and he has followed suit by providing us with some addictive ear candy. Please click on the link provided below to download the podcast. As Kenneth and I would say – it’s that stinky poo poo ( AKA the shit ).

For a preview of the podcast – have a listen to the track below. Franklin not only created the beat but was slick enough to grab the Vocals from Chocolate Rain. . . some might argue the online hit of the summer. If you haven’t heard of or seen Tay Zonday perform Chocolate Rain – YOU MUST WATCH IT HERE!
