I’ve been listening to this album off and on for a few weeks now and have come to the conclusion that it’s a pretty solid effort. It’s easy to get lost in the atmosphere Bubble Shield has created. The album is a quick listen clocking in at only 47:09 but it seems shorter. Time flies by so incredibly fast when the music you’re listening to is enjoyable.

Track of the day

Some might believe otherwise, but I think it’s a great sign when one song doesn’t stand out over any other on an album but rather they all contribute equally to the overall success of the albums direction and vision. It’s rare but every once in a while it happens. I refer to it as the no-skip. Every listen, no track is skipped because it seems out of place or not as good as any other.

Reverie Sound Revue has managed to reach no-skip status with their first LP.

From their Myspace
“Your foot hits the pavement, you feel the city and propel into the flow. Negotiate the kaleidoscope of traffic. Sidewalk slipstream. The underground. Reality blurs and you are floating in space. Drifting, you hear the vibration of a future daydream. This is Reverie Sound Revue.”

The Beats

I heard chatter about Milwaukee/L.A. rapper/producer Haz Solo working on a beat tape a few months back. I remember being pretty excited. A few days ago I got the word that it was out. Another win for Milwaukee Hip-hop.

These beats aren’t like anything you’ve heard or would expect to hear. Haz does a nice job of surprising the listener with an atmospheric layering of textures, off beat juxtapositions and cosmic delays. It all blends in a pleasant way you wouldn’t expect. You’ll have to listen a few times on repeat just to take it all in.

Zappers!

For fans of Herrmutt Lobby and those in the know, Bretzel Zoo (the crew composed of Herrmutt Lobby, Cupp Cave, Dalcym, Dr. Vaen & whoever else) just released their combined effort titled Baywatch. This album is full of ear bending sounds with a distortion like feel that only this Belgium crew can seem to muster.

In keeping with the success of Bassfudge, Baywatch is a continuum of the grit hyper-dub beat driven electronic genre. The tracks are spirited and are intended to be groove ready right out of the box. I’ve enjoyed listening to this album for that alone. The album was released on Eat Concrete, a notable label who also released another YYY pick Take.

The message is simple and pure. Exactly what we need at this time in our history and evolution. ▲❍▼❏.

What’s amazing to me is the attention to detail across a variety of projects associated with GAS’D, a clothing line, who’s look is as universal as it’s message. Everything is done simply & tastefully with a unique elegance that’s unmatched. I can honestly say Gas’d is like no other clothing line doing it right now.

Imani Waddy, owner and creator of GAS’D, and AFTA-1, have put together a truly smooth and eclectic mixtape that has been on constant repeat for the past day or so. A loving, soul infused space journey on a search for a world void of hate. LOVE IS REAL.

After you let Love is Real Vol.3 take over your headphones for a bit be sure to go grab Love is Real Vol.1&2 at the GAS’D Daily Blog.

The Beats

I stumbled upon this terrific album by Chewy Benson recently and have really enjoyed listening to it. Asleep in the Hills is an audio trek into the English countryside. It has many surprising electronic elements including western like samples mixed with british beat sensibility. Some of the tracks feel introspective, and emotional. Some would make a nice soundtrack for a night out with friends.

A snippet from his bio describes Benson as a being “born under the red light of Blackburn’s Thwaites brewery. His formative years were spent in the pursuit of the corect use of the English language. Dictionary’s are his faviroute and most important muse. In the 30’s he played with the great Jack Hylton as a percussionist and sometime tailor. His love of jazz music flourished with a stint backing Sinatra wannabes in working men’s clubs all over the north west. He is presently working on a cure for donk and expects to have rid the country of this scourge in the near future.”

Jolly good show, indeed!

Guilty Pleasures

I have had a song in my head for the last 2 or 3 days. Well actually it was more of a melody and some very vague details. I called friends and sang the little bits I knew to them so they could help me try to save my sanity. No Such Luck. Then this morning I altered the words in my youtube search and BOOM!!! P.M. Dawn Set Adrift On A Memory Bliss. Damn I love this song.

LAZER SWORDSWEATPANTS MONEY MIXTAPE FOR NALDEN.NET

LAZER SWORD is the duo of San Francisco based LOW LIMIT and LANDO KAL. They like to make music that sounds like your favorite top 40 rap shit chopped up into a tornado filled with razor blades and molasses. Or maybe like Frank Zappa rocking the home made Lil John tank-top at the rooftop party.

LAZER SWORD made the SWEATPANTS MONEY MIXTAPE for one of their favorite websites; Nalden.net. A lifestyle blog for people who love to stay ahead of the curve. SWEATPANTS MONEY is featuring 26 tracks blended into a tornado of heavy LAZER SWORD beats with a cappella’s from artists like Ludacris, Jay-Z, M.I.A. & Eazy-E. As a big fan of the duo from SF, Nalden is pleased to host this mix especially made for his blog. Like the blog, the music of LAZER SWORD is to put it bluntly, really next level.

Black-Marmalade Studios designer DeChazier P. Stokes-Johnson was kind enough to create the beautiful artwork for this online release. Available for free on Nalden.net. DeChazier is also a member of this here site. Kudos Marma – good work.

I still can’t believe it. Michael Jackson, one of the best to ever do it is gone. Regardless of how you feel about him personally, as a lover and fan of music you have to respect what the man accomplished. He’s had 13 number-one hit singles in the US, has sold 755 million records and sold out every stop on what was to be his next 50 date tour in minutes. No one else has or ever will accomplish what he did.

Everyone lost a piece of something special yesterday. We all got a chance to witness his life from beginning to end in front of the cameras. He is and will always be the King. R.I.P. Michael.

“Charlie Ahearn came to New York City in 1973 to attend the Whitney Museum of American Art Studio Program. Later he was joined by his twin brother, John, and they became part of an artists’ movement called Co-Lab – short for Collaborative Projects – which is a group determined to go beyond the traditional art world and galleries, and find a way to “be creative in a larger sense”.

For several years during the 1970’s Ahearn, then living in downtown Manhattan, concentrated on making 16-millimetre art films. In 1977 he went to the Alfred E. Smith Projects in the Lower East Side to film local youths practice martial arts with his Super 8 camera, which exposed him to hip-hop. Whilst there he saw murals by graffiti artist George “Lee” Quinones and started filming them alongside the local kids who were break-dancing. This was something that was to influence his artistic output in the following years.

Charlie) would soon move on to shoot the epic film Wild Style.

Check out the quality shots from that time on Charlie’s Flickr.

Covers

Fantastic cover – Fantastic album. K-os releases his fourth album entitled Yes! There’s a consistent theme with his albums thus far. They all possess aspects of soul, rock, some dancehall peppered over hip hop foundations.

Conscientious Canadian hip-hop by the son of devout Jehova’s Witnesses- what could go wrong? Well, surprisingly, not much, as it turns out. The latest offering from Kheaven Brereton aka K-Os is far and away his best work to date, a distinctively measured trip through the mind of a hip-hop mad scientist who appears to finally be comfortable in his character and refined scope of focus.

“Brereton is a Trinidad-born, Toronto-bred rapper/singer/songwriter with a panache for introspective, philosophical lyricism and genre-bending neo-soul hip-hop jams. And yes, that’s a lot of fucking hyphens. The alias K-Os (pronounced “chaos”) is an acronym for “Knowledge Of Self” or “Kheaven’s Original Sound,” depending on who you ask.

Like a hippie mix of Wyclef and Mos Def, K-Os’ production skills and artistic versatility have served him well. His lyrics are powerful and from the heart- a positive, conscientious influence for the hip-hop idol seekers out there.”

Zappers!

Aside from music, we’ll post things we stumble upon that strike us as impressive and inspirational enough that it deserves mention on the site. This post is a bit out of the ordinary, but I feel compelled to share it. A friend of mine had sent me this link recently, it’s to a page of photomanipulated celebrity heads. I’ve found myself sending the link around. It’s repulsive yet fascinating at the same time. I can’t stop looking.

Inspiration

A Dordle is not quite a drawing and not quite a doodle and not quite bad. Each mark of lacerating genius is thoughtfully recorded in the margins of advertising briefs, discarded printouts, or the company stationary. The turds are then scanned, colored, composed and polished on computer. Hopefully, this preserves the playfulness and stupidity of the drawings while giving a bit more depth. Idle hands are the Dordles’s playthings, crafted from inspiration found only through boredom and profound soul-crushing dissatisfaction. I hope these dordles provide you as much excitement as what drove me to draw them in the first place.

Hilarious and worth looking through.

Bravo Nik.

Track of the day

I had posted Bibio’s sampler a few weeks back. The first time I heard it – I was taken aback out how varied the sounds Bibio had created were. An album that goes from typical hip hop, to progressive electronic, to funky disco dance.

“The jittery framework of “Fire Ant” on Ambivalence Avenue would strike most as improbable if there weren’t such diverse influences at work here. Wilkinson’s fondness for psychedelia and perpetual nods toward friends Boards of Canada ring true in his application of analog equipment, but he’ll probably garner some comparisons to California producers Nobody or Madlib, too. At the very least, the sparkling, freaked-out beat-driven numbers such as “Cry! Baby!” or “S’vive” will have Wilkinson’s West Coast musical brethren big-upping Ambivalence Avenue and then promptly loading it into their samplers.” A La RemixMag

Remix gives the album a 3.5 out of 5 – which I think is due to the frenetic aspect found on the album – changing sounds and dabbling in genres. Stephen – I applaud it. Stellar i say.
