Dana Coppa

34 year old rapper Dana Coppa has been an integral part of Milwaukee's hip-hop scene for sometime now. With the release of the serious, funny, and at times sarcastic Lil Yung Mixtape he's making a statement: "Dammit I can rap circles around you "yung" ones while bringing the fun back to the music. The cover has that classic old school No Limit/Cash Money flare to it too. Look at all that ice! Grab it for free here.

ASAP Rocky - Peso

Harlem native ASAP Rocky dropped his second single “Peso” a couple weeks ago. I was sleeping on it at first but I have to say it’s pretty bangin.’ Short and sweet like a swisha. Enjoy!

Jensen Sportag - Gentle Man

We've been following Jensen Sportag for awhile now. They seem to be one of the few groups that are able to channel the magic and mystique of 80's R&B and transform it into something that both feels relavant yet contemporary for today. We have been given the opportunity to debut a new track for the boys entitled Gentle Man. It's been one of my favorite tracks of the summer and has been in constant rotation since the moment it landed in our inbox. Put down the electro wash, autotuned soaked, over produced tunes you've been listening to and wrap yourself up in the sonic gift Jensen Sportag is providing us with today.

More on Jensen can be found at their site, on their soundcloud, and a wonderful write up on them by the Guardian.

Don't sleep on this band.

My Morning Jacket - Victory Dance

My Morning Jacket could be considered one of the leaders of the neo-folk explosion of the last few years. They patented a sound of reverb and echoey vocals layered over a jangled wall of guitars and snare drums. With each release they evolved, trying out new things, and with today’s release of “Circuital” we hear a new other-ness that they have yet explored. Here MMJ seems to have found, like Danger Mouse, an interest in classic Italian Cinema. From the Morricone-esque horns of the intro of the track “Victory Dance” to the murky Goblin-esque build up of distorted psychedelic climax, the track has this Giallo feel to it. The cover art even looks like a Dario Argento film poster. It’s nice to see MMJ’s ever evolving sound and delve into something I never expected.

Billy Comfort & Steffaloo - Wonder of We

Billy Comfort drops an a chilled out spring jam that chops and cuts up a mellow beat with airy vocals that waft over you like a cool breeze. If you are planning a trip to the beach this spring break be sure to add this to your playlist to bump in the car. Enjoy!

Asura - Unreleasables

I've somehow stumbled on Asura's Unreleased. I believe I got there from Atley's site. He's currently art directing the Non Projects label out of Los Angles. We've posted on Anenon and Asura in the past  and they seem to be continuing their exploration. Everytime I listen to this track I find myself rewinding it and playing it again, it's just that good. The vocal repeatition, the beat, evolution of the track are all spot on. The album is free for download. Do it.

This is a brief breakdown of Unreleasables from Asura. “A bunch of music I’m never going to put out due to legal/artistic/motivation issues. mostly from the summer of 2010, a fine summer for us all for sure. featuring “pocket hearts” for download for the first time and a mighty fine “drake” track. please enjoy, won’t be hearing much else like this in the future… from these quarters.”

Image is from But does it float. Atley also runs that.

Truth

The song, “Truth” by Alexander starts out with an Ennio Morricone whistling over an acoustic guitar loop and light jazzy beat. Then comes in the falsetto ooos and ahs. Once the psuedo rapping cadence of Alex Ebert floats in we hear hints of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (probably because Alex fronts the band) yet with a tinge of Grizzly Bear . I absolutely fell in love with this song the second I heard it for first time because not only the melody but the lyrics also carry great meaning. Take a deep listen and find out for yourself why Alex Ebert shines either with or without his band behind him. A truly gifted artist.
