Sibian and Faun

One of my favorite artists of the last few years, Sibian and Faun, have started a label called Half & Half Records. They will be focusing on the promotion of new and innovative music and art by those who surround and inspire us. To hype it up, they are giving away a Sibian & Faun bootleg remix of The Weeknd's High For This. Download it here!

Mogi Grumbles

End of Line is an original re-score of the movie Tron (1981), created by Ann Arbor native French / Disco House antihero Mogi Grumbles. The album is a 100% independent composition that lives wholly outside the original film score by Wendy Carlos and Annemarie Franklin. The result of a live collaboration between Alex Taam and video editor Christian Silbereis, a re-cut of the film featuring the Mogi Grumbles re-score has been released as a companion piece. "Off The Grid Part 1" and " Part 2" are great explosions of sounds, but part deux has a little extra punch. The album was released early this year by naming your own price, but is now available on iTunes and on digital retailers.

Ifan Dafydd

When Ifan Dafydd's single So Good was first played on Gilles Peterson's radio show in February, people assumed it was a new James Blake track. Played with no introduction other than a cursory "I know nothing about this guy", the song's use of densely layered and heavily treated vocals (taken from Amy Winehouse's You Know I'm No Good) interweaved with honey-drip beats and dying organ sounds certainly seemed more than a nod to Blake. The conclusion to – let's be honest here – one of music's least interesting mysteries is that Ifan Dafydd isn't in fact James Blake, but he may be either his cousin or ex-flatmate. So there. We also know his songs have since featured on mixes by SBTRKT and Jamie xx, and To Me is the first track to emerge from Treehouse, a new EP due in January. Opening with pretty piano chords, swirling strings and an off-kilter drum pattern, To Me is more expansive and experimental than So Good. Around the four-minute mark, various strands that seem distinct up to that point, finally intertwine to create heart-bursting loveliness. - The Guardian

This track is pulled from the forthcoming E.P. - Treehouse / To Me.

The photo has nothing to do with Mr. Dafydd - other than a common name sharing that I found on google images. It somehow feels appropriate.

Youth Lagoon - 17

Trevor Powers, the indie-pop brilliance behind Youth Lagoon, has home-recorded a hit record.  He’s got a touch for poetic imagery and pretty melodies that stand apart from others in the indie scene. All those years playing music in a small town has apparently paid off.

“The Year of Hibernation” is Power’s warm and fuzzy cry to venture outside Boise, Idaho. The entire album has a claustrophobic, yet comfy bedroom feeling. He gives listeners a peek into his childhood, but keeps them entertained with catchy sing-alongs and electric keys.

This short and sweet song not only breathes nostalgia, it has some memorable lyrics:

When I was seventeen, my mother said to me.  "Don’t stop imagining. The day that you do is the day that you die."

Sounds like her son took that literally and created a great album,  this song in particular.

DJ Diamond - Rep Yo Clique (Remix)

This re-re-re-re-re-re-re-remix is one filthy head-trip. “Flight Muzik” is the strongest and most explorative album i’ve heard this year venturing out of Chicago. 24 year old DJ Diamond, aka Karlis Griffin, has been producing music since his early teens. At the rate he's going, I foresee him dominating the music scene very soon. You can find him and other footwork producers on Planet Mu Records.  Remember to always 'rep yo clique.'

Lapalux - Fear of Drowning

From Prefix mag. "We previously heard from U.K. producer/Brainfeeder artist Lapalux when he decided to tackle one of his roster mate's tunes in Thundercat's "For Love I Come." The resulting track was a woozy beast and a sign that Lapalux certainly has something special to offer the music world. While we have to wait until early 2012 to hear his first Brainfeeder release, he's still on the remix tip. His most recent venture is "Fear of Drowning" by Brighton-based outfit Mirrors. Lapalux has turned it into a highly addictive, quivering jam that's got a codeine-mixed-with-molasses-thick low end."

Elephant & Castle

Earlier this Summer, the Los Angeles based Plug Research released an e-single, Sweet Someone by a producer by the name of Elephant & Castle (aka David Vincent Reep from the Bay Area) to wonderful reviews. XLR8R had this to say about the single, “The single comes with word that the label will be issuing an Elephant & Castle LP in the not-too-distant future, but for now we're happy to savor tracks like this until that day arrives.” Now the young producer is back with his self-titled EP on November 1st. The 6-song EP consists of the previously released 2 tracks from the e-single, “Sweet Someone (Featuring Aaron Ferguson)” and “I Will” plus 4 previously unreleased tracks “RGB,” “Altered Scones,” “The Hangar” and “I Will (Spirituals Remix)”.

Reep, whose artist moniker actually comes from a particular London neighborhood, had this to say about his music, “With this project, I chose music that resonated with me because I’ve found that if I get a strong emotional reaction from something, chances are other people will feel it too.” And that’s completely evident based on the reaction his debut received when it was released. The Analogue EP garnered interest from Pitchfork, Daddy Kev, amongst others and The San Francisco Weekly wrote about the EP “sounds like a brief version DJ Shadow's monumental Endtroducing..... album as visualized by Flying Lotus and his beat scene compatriots.” So sit back and enjoy the musical odyssey of the Elephant & Castle EP which gives a further glimpse of what one can expect when his full-length album, Transitions is released on Plug Research in 2012.

Ifan Dafydd

"This shit right here... make you wear sunny's at night no glare" Incredible music. It's been a while since I the a song made the hairs on my arm stand up. Pause. Ifan Dafydd once thought to be an alias of Jame Blake is said to be his friend and possibly even a former roomate of his. Sure you can hear similarities to Blake but it stands on it's own well. The 12" is sold out everywhere but you download it here.

D.A. and the Supa Dups

D.A. of Chester French sent me a track via Spotify of a new track that he made with a new group he is in called D.A. & the Supa Dups. I was floored at how fresh but familiar it sounded. I can't wait to hear a Full Length effort from these guys but for now head on over to their site for a free 7"!

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Thought Ballune

Unknown Mortal Orchestra is a New Zealand fronted PDX psycherock band that popped up on my radar last year via their band camp page. The band seems to have hit its stride and released a full length album this summer that is totally worth a purchase. Actually, they are touring the US as we speak so you could even catch them live. I personally am smitten with them. Their sound is a perfect blend of prog, kraut, psyche, and pop with that lo-fi tinge that keeps it from getting to polished. Take a gander at their site to get more info.
