Une Semaine Avec Lui feat. Rap Lisa

Voices of Black, consisting of Baba Ali and Jules Born are just out of their teens, but producing some advanced house and hip-hop mixtures. After being introduced to the Wolf+Lamb family in 2010, they released an original house beat tape named 'Plastic Dolls'. Her Flower EP is another step into the house-funk direction.

They’ve fused funky beats and synths, worldly grooves, and an array of vocals and sultry lyrics here. “Une Semaine Avec Lui” is a refreshingly-dancy track, and I have to give them props for switching up the language.

Très bonne musique ici!

Marc Newson’s “Transport” at Gagosian Gallery

If you're in New York, you only have 2 days left to visit legendary industrial designer Marc Newson's "Transport," a thematic exhibition that brings together for the first time all of his major designs and realized products for transport and human locomotion since 1999.

Marc Newson is one of the most accomplished and influential designers of his generation. At 44, he has already worked across a wide range of disciplines to create everything from chairs, household objects, a bicycle and a concept car to restaurants, a recording studio and interiors of private and commercial jets, for clients based in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.

Eric Yahnker

On a recent trip to Europe, I found myself in a french newstand flipping through a bunch of mags, one stuck with me entitled Clark which showcases a variety of artists. One that really stood out was the work of Eric Yahnker. I'm not sure what to write about Mr. Yahnker's work other than I like the twisted nature of his work, see all of it here.

In 1984 Steve Powers started climbing rooftops in his neighborhood and painting his alias ESPO as a dues paying member of the ICY graffiti club. 25 years later he returned home to Philadelphia in the summer of 2009 to write a love letter across the same rooftops facing the Market-Frankford line. The letter, meant for one, with meaning for all, encompasses 50 walls on a 20 block stretch of market street. Drawing input, inspiration, and work from the community Powers created a letter to and from west Philly. This unprecedented public art project was a collaboration of Powers, The Mural Arts Program, and the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage. It required 1200 cans of spray paint, 800 gallons of bucket paint, and the skilled hands of 20 of the finest spray painters in America, who Powers put into the legendary ICY club.

“A Love Letter For You – Brick Valentines On The Philly Skyline” documents the art and the neighborhood that inspired this ambitious public art project.

Efterklang

I’m enamoured with this latest single from Efterklang.

The name ‘Efterklang’ comes from the Danish word for remembrance or reverberation. Though it consists of four core members, the group regularly includes three or more members for live gigs and plays orchestral and experimental rock music. Formed in Copenhagen, its four core members are: Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen, Thomas Husmer and Rasmus Stolberg. The original lineup also included Rune Mølgaard, but he has taken a more secluded role since 2007. When performing live, the core four-piece band is complemented with the addition of three to four closely-related live band members.

Their new Album releases this month I believe.

More of their music can be found on itunes.

Also – the wonderful cover was created by Hvass & Hannibal. They documented the process of it being created here.

Barbara Kruger

While walking the streets of NY recently, I stumbled upon the Lever House in which I’ve seen other amazing installations and low and behold – who has an installation currently – Barbara Kruger. A inspiration of mine, a graphic designer who made the leap into the fine art world that has somehow kept her composure and overall typographic aesthetic of a designer. This installation should NOT be missed.

This new work is an immersive installation that transforms the iconic Lever Lobby into a textual array that zigzags between declaration and doubt, between threat and tenderness. It s the in-between that inserts itself into the brilliantly edged heart of architectural modernism and speaks of the space between the event and the everyday. Kruger s installation addresses the stroller and the task driven, and suggests the complicated terrain of this site, a piling on of power, ambition, pleasure, laughter, contempt and the finality of it all. As she has stated: “I think what I’m trying to do is create moments of recognition. To try to detonate some kind of feeling or understanding of lived experience . I try to deal with the complexities of power and social life, but as far as the visual presentation goes I purposely avoid a high degree of difficulty.”

Gus Powell

I went to an exhibition the other day entitled NY Perspectives. I learned of Gus Powell’s work and feel compelled to share it with you.

“In the absence of a restful European siesta, New Yorkers take the lunch hour by storm. We get our shoes shined while our hair is being cut, run three errands while eating a sandwich, smoke four cigarettes while we dance past tourists. We jaywalk. We move on.

Yet amidst all this independent action, there exists an unspoken fraternity. Like members of a secret society, teeming pedestrians march in a parade of broken cadence to countless tunes, in all directions, for every reason. Street corners are standing-room-only meeting halls, where shoulders rub shoulders in impromptu one-act plays.

I try to be ready for those moments that have a subtle comedy or tragedy to them; moments when strangers come together for a split second and are rendered inseparable through a photograph.

Born 1974 in New York City, Gus lives and works in Brooklyn, where he does commercial and editorial photography. His personal work can be seen at the Ariel Meyerowitz Gallery, and he is currently working on a collection of photographs entitled “Lost & Found.”

His work lives here.
