Banco De Gaia - Songs From The Silk Road

After hearing  Banco de Gaia (aka Toby Marks) on Sirius XM Chill station, I fell in love with his music. Songs From The Silk Road might be my new favorite album.  Released earlier this year, the album reveals two decades of recordings, hits and remixes from this father of elecronica. This is a compilation of his best work; a cross-pollination of world music and house. The album vibrates with a tribal electricity.

“I wanted to round up the body of work and create a portfolio for new listeners. The origins of this sound, a sound that’s now ubiquitous, are really interesting, and I want people to know more about it. Back then in early days, we were inventing this whole new thing. This album shows that, and how things have evolved since,” says Gaia.

Washed Out - Before

Till now there has only been a EP and a few tracks put out by Atlanta producer Washed Out. His first full length Within And WIthout is out now on Sub-Pop, the same label that first put out Nirvana. This release continues the to push the boundaries of synth pop with syrupy flow.

Broadcast - Unchanging Window / Chord Simple

I found out some tragic news yesterday. Trish Keenan of Broadcast passed away just a week ago from pneumonia complications. I thought I’d share one of my favorite tracks, Unchanging Window, from one of their earlier albums to pay respects to her and her family. She will be sorely missed as her haunting vocals fit perfectly with Broadcast’s psychedelic lo-fi sounds. Also, be sure to check out The Mind Bending Motorway Mix Trish compiled for her friend of obscure psych pop rarities

Com Truise - Pyragony/Tripya

Flip your inner Tom Cruise inside out on this one. I have been selfishly listening to this two track release by Com Truise for a few weeks. It's time to share it with the world, if you do not all ready know about it. It's being given away as a free download, so no excused not to fill up your unused downloading bandwidth. My only problem with Com Truise is that I want more, a lot more. When is that full-lengh going to drop?

Com Truise - Norkuy

Com Truise is 1985, now. Think ghetto blasters, water-proof Walkman's and Casio keyboards playing the Bossa Nova beats slowed all the way down. I love the word play on their name, very smart. The also have a beautiful website with lots of free music, just like this Cyanide Sisters EP.

A classic that I keep on heavy rotation. Grand Puba gets the award for most odd references in rap verses.. only cat who can mention magic markers and Betty Crocker in the same sentence and somehow manage to keep it interesting. Even “getting looser than a crackhead’s hair weave” hah.. gotta love the Grand P.

Starlighter - Jupiter

Having grown up in the 80’s, I have soft spot in my heart for anything reminiscent of that time period. It was nice when synthesizers were real analog and drum machine’s just had a few presets.

Looks like I am not the only one feeling a little nostalgic. I seem to have found a bunch of artists bringing back the 80’s sound. Give Data, Anorak, or the band Jupiter a listen. Break that IZOD shirt out of storage and bring the fucking 80’s back.

I was digging through some old cassettes recently . . . cough, cough, yes youngsters, cassettes. I found this single. Take a stroll with me down memory lane.

Force Field

Can you believe this came out in ’88?? Way ahead of it’s time. One of my all time old-school favorites. The cover says it all. This should’ve been a “Covers” post. But, nuff said. Peep the track.
