Stellar new album, Gilmmer by Ghostly's Jacaszek. On Spotify. It's wonderful music if you need to buckle down and concentrate. The artwork is done by the talanted Mike Cina.
Cascine, the little label with some of 2011's most charming sounds, has entered the new year, hoisting two of their most distinctive artists, Southern Shores and Selebrities, across the calendar gap into this weird, uncertain future. The two groups linked with Philadelphia's Work Drugs out of mutual admiration and friendship, crafting totally them remixes of Work Drugs' 'Ice Wharf', a song lovingly dedicated to near-blackouts in Camden. Hectic Zeniths is the work of bedroom producer and multi-instrumentalist Adam Morgan Prince. Hectic Zeniths is an anagram for the German word ‘Zeitschichten,’ meaning layers of time. After three years, the densely layered project is finished. Songs build around original piano compositions with atmospheric collages of pitched vinyl samples, live instrumentation, synths and haunting vocals. The song feels cold, but is piercingly pretty like icicles. So here's a creepily-calm track to help wind down 2011. It's been one exciting and hectic year.
The album drops January 2012.
Black Up is the latest release from Shabazz Palaces, and it's one fuckin' hypnotic album. Distorted beats, evocative lyrics and sludgy sounds create some tripped-out, murky atmospheres. This 'Late Night Creepin' body of work is top of the list of 2011, for sure. A fascinating and grimy track here.
Beats Antique's sound is creepy in a good way. They fuse world music and electronic, which creates a dynamic circus of sounds. Zoe, the leader in the operation, moves her body in perfect synchronicity with the music. Her belly whomps and it is amazing. We posted this video on Channel Y, which should give you some inclination of their talents. "Revival" is off their newest album Elektrafone.

A great soulful E.P. that's equal parts dreamy, atmospheric and poetic. An overall gorgeous soundscape that when paired with Amenta's chocolatey velvet vocals is a winning combination.
Listen. Everyone loves sunshine, tacos and ice cold Coronas, but summer is over. And while the sun still shines, it just doesn't shine the same; therefore I choose the moonlight. Here comes one deep track from Axel Boman that is much better listened in the darkness. Find a basement, a dim blue light, plug in the Klipsch La Scalas, and invite some weird girls.

Freddie Gibbs dropped Str8 Killa about a year ago but I only discovered it until this week. There are some definite gems on it too so I am surprised I slept on it for so long. My personal favorite is the last track “Oil Money” featuring Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys singing the hook, Chip tha Ripper, Bun B, and Chuck Inglish. It’s reminiscent of Dan’s other side project, Blakroc, with it’s soulful, gritty, down south laid back drawl. It’s been on repeat all week. Check it out.
Sticking with local music, another LA beat maker I have recently discovered is Cliff Dweller. They are a collective of musicians, photographers, and film makers who create not only music but art and exhibits as well. That being said, the music is pretty damn good. It’s mellow, down tempo, slightly distorted electronic beats perfect for a lazy Sunday. Check their bandcamp page for more. Enjoy!
