Track of the day

Los Angeles producers Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus and Mainframe recently worked with Gonjasufi (via Nevada desert) to produce his latest album A Sufi and a Killer. The album has already garnered great reviews and deservingly so. Sufi’s haunting vocals surface through brilliant beat making with layers upon layers of interesting sound. The album transcends collaborative effort and prevails as a triumph. I can say, I truly appreciate these sort of efforts. These cats are at the top of their hustle, and they do it well.

Lots of cool content out there surrounding this album. Check out the videos here and here

The Beats

I’m making cinematic/comicbook beat tapes, Have worked with alot of underground rappers around the world, influenced by the greats like MADLIB DILLA obviously but also people like S.Maharba and BlueDaisy are also people I respect alot. Benji B once played one of my beats on his deviation show called “eastside” and I have an album out digitaly and on cassette through sassbologna records called “escape from LoFly city” and at the moment im working on another tape called “The Story of The Eye”

If you like your hip hop and beats with lots of swelling strings and emotion – Dredi’s Escape from Lo-fi City may be something for you.

Track of the day

Buy this album now! Seriously good stuff from this relatively unknown band out of Brooklyn. I discovered Arpline while reading Phantogram’s Twitter. The pace, drums and overall pace of this track is simply great. The Album is full of a nice refreshing diversity. Best of all . . . pay what you want for it. One thing is definitely certain – BUY IT.

The image is of my favorite photographer of the moment. Saul Leiter. His color photography has risen to the public’s eye in the last 20 years. He has and was known primarily as a fashion photographer. His color work, shot here and there, is stellar. I love this quote by him. “I spent a great deal of my life being ignored. I was always very happy that way. Being ignored is a great privilege. That is how I think I learnt to see what others do not see and to react to situations differently. I simply looked at the world, not really prepared for anything.”

Inspiration

End Scene from Steffen Bygebjerg on Vimeo.

This video was made by Steffen Bygebjerg in 2009 for the song “End Scene”. The track is taken from Troels Abrahamsen’s album WHT also from 2009.

The animation work was made in Adobe After Effects. Each frame was then printed and the print was subsequently scanned back into the computer. The scanned frames were then assembled back into the original animation, now with a new rugged look, created by the visit in the physical analogue world. No effects added after scanning.

This is such a lovely track. Discovered Catcall from Crumbs. Thank you oh mighty interwebs. Haven’t found much on Catherine other than a link to her site and this very brief bio statement.

The Beats

Yea anooooooother beatmaker. What can we say? We like the beats. Espicially from readers like you. We received a very simple little note from Aussie Max Kohane about a new E.P. he just posted entitled pieces and portions vol. 1.

Keep pushing Max.

The photo was found from a interesting Flickr page. Solarixx Spend some time and go through some of the images – Some are NSFW.

Podcasts

Oh boy, oh boy. Kenneth and I have been passing this idea back and forth and it’s finally come to fruition. Everyone is so damn mix happy these days but more time then not we find gaps and lulls in the music. We feel very confident in the music we label “track of the day” so much so that we’ll hold up mixes made of these tracks with anything else. Thumps chest. All jokes aside. FS Green has been a favorite of ours for some time and it only made sense to have him do a mix based off his expertise in his Mixing Monthly series with Full Crate.

The Tracklist is below:

Take – Make Believe
Mux Mool – Eagle Fantasies
Javelin – Tryouts
Cerebral Vortex & Erik L – Never Fall In Love
Onra – My Comet
Mr Beatnick – I Know All The Bitches Ft. Ahu (Simbad Slow Mix)
Erykah Badu – Soldier (Co. Fee Remix)
Lusine – Tin Hat
Nosaj Thing – Coat of Arms
Dorian Concept – The Fucking Formula
Midas Hutch – Don’t Wanna Be Rude (Auger Remix)
Taylor McFerrin – Ft. Vincent Parker
Burial & Four Tet – Wolf Cub
Jamie Vex’d – Radiant Industry
Scuba – Twitch (Jamie Vex’d Remix)
Phoenix – 1901
Reverie Sound Revue – An Anniversary Away
T.I. vs Coldplay – What You Know (Quix & Elliot Blend)
SiFunk – Moments In Love
Lone – Karen Loves Kate

Track of the day

PHANTOGRAM is the duo comprised of Sarah D. Barthel and Joshua M. Carter of Saratoga Springs, NY. Their music is a mix of organic and electronic sounds, with swirling guitar, spaced-out synths, and chopped up samples and rhythms.

Grabbed this from Impose magazine – Originally released on the BBE label, their full-length debut has finally gotten a proper stateside release. Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel make up Phantogram, a rock/pop hybrid prone to moody selections awash in a sea of guitars, overdubbed vocals, and analog synths. Hip-hop influences creep in and allow the beat maker within to craft neck-snapping rhythms to the paranoid aura of “Running From The Cops” and the sample-accented “As Far As I Can See”.

Superb well rounded album.

Just because something is free doesn’t mean it’s good. Transversely if something is good and it is also free then damn…you’re winning!

Lucky for us all, the latter is true when it comes to Yo-Dot’s newest free webtape Dot-Balistrerri. The album is full of street anthems and honest tales of his come-up. Pause. If you live it you can relate, if you don’t, get your pens and notebooks…he lays out what it’s like in gritty detail form beginning to end. Head knockers and trunk rattlers galore.

I’ve been listening to the new Yamon Yamon album The Wilderness for a nice while now. Every time I do I fall deeper and deeper into their world. A world where lushy guitars, shoegazed vocals, and afro-beat drums live together naturally and effortlessly.

There isn’t one, skip this sh*t, track of the 9 the album has to offer. I have to imagine editing played a large role in the album being so consistent. Rare in our “more, more, more” is better world but that makes me appreciate the album that much more.

You can buy their new album and older E.P. here

Track of the day

I came across B. Lewis last night. A late night creepin episode and boy oh boy . . . his FREE beattape is extremely well done. He’s got a blog he’s running called outside thebox and he’s also got a nice place on bandcamp where you can listen to bunch of his beats.

The image I picked is of one of my favorite artists. Mark Jenkins. Talk about street art and subversion. His work is completely distorted requiring one to check what’s real vs. imaginary. Spend just two minutes on his site and you’ll get a better idea of what he’s up to.

Brad – if you’re reading this – great work and shoot us an email at YYY.

CMY

Noteworthy

It’s always a nice surprise when we wake up to good music waiting for us in our inbox. This group from Warszawa, Poland, CMY have put together a really infectious instrumental album titled Kim Zonk Funk that for $5.00 you’d be foolish not to buy.

From their myspace:
After 7 years of undercover action, the duo has finally revealed their identities. In an ingenious attempt to avoid prejudice among Polish listeners, Cmy managed to get their attention and be recognized as one of the most fresh and inspiring acts to emerge from Poland in the last couple of years. It turns out that Cmy are actually: Yaro (a well-known and recognizable Polish music producer) and DJ George (Yaro’s long time music friend and co-worker).

The art that does a great job of really capturing the mood of the track and accompanies this post was created by Joan Miró. Peep some of his work here
